At the Marble Falls Public Library, 101 S. Main St., we have started the Texas Reading Club for children. The theme is “Catch the Reading Express.” The library is decorated with train car sun-catchers painted by students during the recent Children’s Day in the Park.
When you register for the Reading Express, you may vote for the color you want librarian Eileen Smith to dye her hair. If the total minutes read by all readers from May 24–June 26 equals 100,000 minutes or more, “Ms. Eileen” will get her hair dyed the color with the most votes.
If you read at least 300 minutes by June 26, you may get your hair sprayed the same color – if you want – at the closing ceremony.
Programs for elementary students finishing second through fifth grade are every Thursday in June at 3:30 p.m.
Just look at the fun programs planned:
On June 10 we will grab a bite in the dining car — make your own pizza and find out how Little Red Hen gets the job done.
On June 17 we will catch a ride in the passenger car. Mummies will come alive. Make your choice of a wesekh or a falcon amulet to take home.
Then on June 24, mad scientists are invited to the library for an optical-illusion workshop. Use a periscope while learning about optics, reflection and sight. Watch celebrity images change before your eyes. Make your own kaleidoscope toy to take home.
You will need to register for this ride on the observation deck of the Reading Express. The program is limited to 30 students.
Preschoolers and first-graders can join us on an amazing adventure as “Tex,” the Texas Traveler, takes us around the world. We will see the sights as we read our way into the “Wilds of Africa,” then onward to the opposites ends of the world where it is “Brrr! Cold at the Poles.” Then we can “Hop into Australia” and end our last week as we go “Reading Through the Rainforest.”
Each Thursday at 10:45 a.m. we will travel along and enjoy music and movement, snacks, story time with marvelous books and a craft that will remind us of our travels.
The Closing Ceremony is 6 p.m. June 29. Each reader who has read at least 300 minutes will be recognized and will receive a reading certificate. Also, you will find out what color “Ms. Eileen’s” hair will be and those readers who have read 300 minutes may have their hair sprayed the same color.
But we haven’t forgotten the older readers, either.
The Marble Falls Public Library’s Adult Summer Reading Program is back by popular demand. Make plans to be at the library every Friday in June at 11:30 a.m. for weekly mini-vacations as we “Read Across America.” Enjoy lunch and entertaining guests.
Each week will be a little different as we “travel” across the states to learn local history and travel advice, as well as sample regional foods. Space is limited and registration is required for each week.
Our first stop was the Great North with the spotlight on Chicago on Friday. MIKE & mike’s — http://www.austinschicagodog.com — brought the taste of Chicago to the Hill Country by serving up authentic hotdogs.
On June 11, we will arrive on the Pacific Coast and spotlight San Francisco. The Austin American-Statesman’s Helen Anders, who recently visited the home of the Golden Gate Bridge, is coming to the library to share her travel experiences.
Then it is on to the Deep South. On June 18, native New Iberian Rob Morrow will speak about the pleasures of growing up in Louisiana. Cajun food is a must for this wonderful program.
Our final destination is the East Coast. We will spotlight the food and history of New York City, Boston and Philadelphia. Also, learn how to be your own travel agent.
As I mentioned before, each week will be a little different, so you won’t want to miss a single stop on the Reading Express. While you are at the library, be sure to register for the reading program for a chance to win special weekly prizes during June. It’s easy and fun, so sign up today by calling (830) 693-3023.
