The Highland Lakes are for the birds. Literally. This area claims some of the best bird-watching spots in Texas.
So let’s grab those binoculars, the Peterson birding guide, a camera and head out.
Here in the Highland Lakes you’ll find (if you look hard enough) birds from painted buntings to hawks.
These raptors aren’t the only feathered creatures flying above the Highland Lakes. We have golden-cheeked warblers, black-capped vireos and hawks, just to name a few. Keep an eye on the roads, too, for roadrunners.
The state parks in the area provide lots of great opportunities for birding and you might even find a few private ranches that host birders. On the eastern edge of Burnet County and western Travis County, the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge offers birders a nice place to work on their lifetime lists.
